Building Metadata with What You Have Around the Office

Dawn Michels

Building Metadata with what you have around the office. Metadata is an important corporate asset, that is all too often overlooked and under-funded. The organization often expects their data professionals to produce metadata out of whatever is available around the office, and slip it in between other project priorities. It is no wonder that so many projects, data related and otherwise do not have proper metadata documentation.

This presentation will give some down to earth examples of putting together your own home-spun Metadata Repository. The topics covered include:

  • Types of Metadata
  • Tools for accessing and retrieving metadata
  • Tools for sharing metadata
  • Making the case for ROI on Metadata
  • Uses of Metadata

A new practitioner will take home steps to proceed with, while a season practitioner may learn some methods for persuasion.

Key take-aways from this presentation are:

- - Identify Metadata of interest in your office

- - Evaluate tools you have on hand

- - Create a simple metadata model

- - Develop a partnership with a person who is also passionate about data

- - Document some specific ways that good metadata could save money

- - Look for a project you can latch (leech) onto

- - Start small – but design for the future

- - Make your metadata purposeful and needed
